Dili – This year’s Five Outstanding Filipinos in Timor-Leste were announced. They are:

PTR. NELSON R. FERNANDEZ
Founder of Agape Community in Timor-Leste.
Residing in Timor-Leste for 9 years now.

PTR. FERNANDO L. FLORES
Missionary and founder of the Christian Asian Mission International in Timor-Leste.
Residing in Timor-Leste for 9 years now.

SR. MARYLU D. MARIANO, OP
Local Superior of the Dominican Sisters Ascensionical Community.
Residing in Timor-Leste for 11 years now.

TEODORO M. MAGSAKAY
Proprietor of Cool Air Technology.
AFET President 2006.
Residing in Timor-Leste for 9 years now.

RAMON G. OLIVEROS
Advisor to the Planning & Financial Management Capacity Building Programme.
AFET President 2009.
Residing in Timor-Leste for 9 years now.


The awardees represent a mix of Filipino talents and expertise. They are noted for their significant contributions to the development efforts of Timor-Leste and including their impact to the Filipino community in Timor-Leste, as a whole.

The Search Committee, composed of three (3) Filipinos and two (2) Timorese nationals used the following criteria:

Residency – Minimum of two years and still residing in Timor-Leste - (10%)

Contribution(s) to the Filipino community to Timor-Leste - (25%)
(Performance in the social, educational, health, economic, spiritual, and moral fields.)

Contribution(s) to the development in Timor-Leste - (40%)
(Performance in the social, educational, health, economic, spiritual, and moral fields.)

Personal Values and Qualities - (25%)
(Leadership skills, intelligence, common sense, relationship with others, friendliness, humility, and zeal in his/her service.)

Now on its second year, the search for Five (5) Outstanding Filipinos in Timor-Leste was conceived as an integral part of the yearly celebration of the Anniversary of Philippine Independence. It aims to honor and highlight the contributions of Filipinos who are based in Timor-Leste in the development efforts and nation-building of the country. The award is also seen as an encouragement to members of the Filipino community in Timor-Leste to continue to excel in their respective fields and bring glory to the Philippines while posted in Timor-Leste.

The Five Outstanding Filipinos in Timor-Leste will be honored during the Gala Night dubbed as “Gabi Ng Parangal 2009” that will be held on Saturday, 13 June 2009 at the Salao Delta Nova at 6:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Association of Filipinos in East Timor (AFET) in cooperation with the Philippine Embassy in Dili.
