"A Gift of Life for Timor" - A Blood Letting Activity

I don’t know your name, but your blood has saved my life.” - Anonymous Timorese

AFET, together with the Badminton Association of Filipinos and Friends in East Timor (BAFFET) and international friends, has conducted a program called “A Gift of Life for Timor” or "Handog Buhay para sa Timor", on June 2 and 16, 2007 at the National Blood Bank of the Guido Valadares National Hospital. The program is a symbolic gesture to commemorate the Philippine Independence Day and International Blood Donor’s Day. The Ministry of Health renewed its appeal for voluntary blood donation from civil society to increase blood reserve to about 0.4% of total population. About 40 generous individuals have voluntarily responded to the ongoing program.

Blood is essential for transporting oxygen, nutrients, and other substances to tissues throughout the body. Donated blood can be lifesaving for individuals who have lost large amounts of blood because of accidents or surgery, as well as for individuals who have become severely anemic or have dangerously low platelet counts because of certain medical conditions and/or treatments.

The program is part of the health assistance program of AFET, a Filipino association in Timor Leste since 2002. The association aims to promote the welfare of its members and strengthen the friendly relation and cooperation between the peoples of the Philippines and Timor-Leste, as well as international community.

We would like to thank the following blood donors who voluntarily participated in this activity:
