The Former President of the Republic of the Philippines, Fidel V. Ramos’ Meeting With AFET’s Bayaning Manggagawang Pilipino sa Silangang Timor
AFET’s Filipino community, which we consider as mga Bayaning Manggagawang Pilipino sa Silangang Timor, met with the former President, Fidel V. Ramos last July 12, 2007 (Thursday) at Kampai Restaurant, Dili, Timor-Leste.
During the 45-minute personal encounter with the former President, five (5) sectoral representatives had the opportunity of sharing their experiences while living in Timor-Leste. They also presented issues mostly relating to working visas and permits in this country.
These sectoral representatives were: Egay of the Construction Sector; Ted Magsakay, AFET’s Past President and Nanay Eva Casas of the Services Sector, Ramon Santiago of the Religious Sector and Ramon Oliveros of the International NGOs/GOs and other multi-latera/bilateral organizations.
AFET’s current President, Mitz Mendoza, also shared the organization’s general directions, accomplishments from January-June 2007 and future activities for the remaining months of the year.
Former President FVR was so informal and candid while interacting with the Filipino community. He simply relayed the message “KAYA NATIN ITO”, encouraging everyone to support and help each other, flashing his usual signature ”thumbs up” sign. Of course, the best part for everyone was the photo opportunity for each of the sectors. Naku! Biglang nagkagulo ang lahat! Lumabas lahat ang mga personal cameras.
After the FVR meeting with AFET’s Filipino community, the Board members and Advisers had a sit-down dinner with the guest of honor at Hotel Timor. This event was sponsored by the Philippine Embassy. In here, the Board members and Advisers had the former President’ signature in the menu list that each one brought home as a souvenir, including golf balls marked specially with the President’s rallying motto “CARING-SHARING-DARING”. Masaya ang lahat! At busog din ang lahat!
